Be alert whenever the phone shows an-alert like a certificate is invalid or cannot be verified. Whenever an alert is presented do mot proceed further. You might run your connection though a man in the middle attack which is spoofing traffic.
Keep a long and complex password instead a pin or pattern to secure your phone. Wipe the screen after every unlock to remove the smudges.
Only install Apps from Google Play Store. They are not 100% safe since malicious apps have been found, but it is the most secure among the available option.
Do not install apps from unknown developer's from plays store if you have banking / work related apps in your phone. If possible, use a dedicated phone for apps you trust and have access to your confidential date. Only give the minimum possible access to any app.
For example, an average video game has no need to access your contacts. The best way is to deny all and activate them if affecting the app usages.
Do not plug your phone to USB ports in public areas. These are usually found in airport charging stations. You can connect your USB Cable to your power bank and then connect the power bank to your phone. You can use USB CONDOMS. ;)
Use guest mood/screen pinning if you have to temporarily share your phone to someone els.
